Case Overview
This pro bono case was brought to Husch Blackwell through an employee of a client who reached out to see if we could help. In a personal capacity, the employee funded a lease for a family of three in Dallas so that they could get a fresh start after experiencing homelessness. Unfortunately, the family encountered a not-so-scrupulous property manager and landlord. The firm stepped in to defend the family from a wrongful eviction and withholding of the security deposit.
How Husch Blackwell Helped
Associates Alex Brakefield and Ryan Weger helped defend the family from a wrongful eviction, enabling the family to remain in the unit for the entirety of the lease. At the end of the lease’s term, the landlord and property manager falsely accused the tenants of causing damage to the unit and refused to return the full security deposit. Associate Javon Johnson then stepped in to represent the tenants by conducting research, gathering evidence, formulating strategy, and, ultimately, litigating the case extraordinarily well before the judge. Javon won at trial and the family was awarded a judgment for the full amount afforded under the law, including statutory damages. Javon helped this family seek justice as they moved from homelessness to stability.
