Kansas City Office Managing Partner Jeff Simon talks with Alvin Brooks about the history of race and racism in America. Brooks has personally lived this history for almost 90 years, all the while striving to bring together the black and white communities in Kansas City.
Among other things, Brooks will discuss the riots which erupted in Kansas City and across the United States following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the reform efforts initiated in their aftermath.
Using Kansas City as one example of the situation in cities around the country, Brooks will discuss the final report of the Mayor’s Commission on Civil Disorder, which was issued in 1968. The Report examined the underlying conditions which fueled the riots and made recommendations on how to address those conditions. Brooks will talk about the progress and ongoing challenges associated with policing, economic opportunity, education, transportation, and housing, all of which were identified as underlying causes of the 1968 riots and also that speak to our current efforts to build better, more inclusive communities.
