Outside the Office
Mike enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.
Mike enjoys home life with his wife and three daughters. He also likes to travel with them on family vacations. They have traveled to Scandinavia and France and have visited U.S. national parks, including Glacier and Rocky Mountain.
Community Leadership
For more than 15 years, Mike has helped the Texas Assisted Living Association (TALA) with almost every major policy initiative affecting assisted living providers in Texas.
TALA provides a forum to help people understand the options offered by assisted living. Mike began working with the organization as a lobbyist in 2001 and has supported TALA in its mission ever since. He also has served on the board of directors since 2007.
Mike helps set policy agenda and achieve policy goals, writes legislation and regulations, testifies on policy matters and routinely interacts with the Texas Legislature and lead officials for Texas healthcare agencies. Specifically, Mike helped secure private accreditation of assisted living communities, negotiated the scope of practice of skilled nursing in these facilities and began reform for an informal dispute resolution program. He also helped secure tort reform for assisted living providers.
