Topics
- Future Strategy, Future Growth: How the Recession and Reform Will (and Won''t) Change Hospital and Health System Economics
By Jessica Sweeney-Platt, The Advisory Board
Weakened capital markets, high unemployment and interventionist policy frameworks are shaking fundamental assumptions of many health systems’ strategic plans. This presentation assesses the prospects for how economic dislocation and policy reform will (and will not) realign fundamental hospital incentives.
- Strategies for Successful Hospital/Physician Integration
By Curt Chase and John Powers, Husch Blackwell Sanders
Hospitals and physicians are searching for new ways to integrate and align incentives to help them deal with several issues: shrinking physician reimbursement, bundled payments and Accountable Care Organizations, greater competition for certain specialists, and the challenge of building a primary care base. Curt and John discuss the strategic, operational and legal structures used and considered around the country, along with the pros and cons of various models, from traditional employment to group practice subsidiaries and clinical co-management arrangements. Presenters also address the challenge of allowing physicians to have autonomy while minimizing hospitals'' financial exposure.
- Healthcare Quality Initiatives: The Next Big Thing
By Barb Miltenberger and Pete Enko, Husch Blackwell Sanders
The recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act places increased emphasis on quality as a condition for healthcare payment, consistent with past and present Congressional reforms. These legislative initiatives include incentives to meet (and sanctions for failure to meet) established patient care and quality benchmarks. In this session, Barb and Pete will discuss proactive measures providers may adopt in response to these mandates and cover hot issues in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the OIG''s 2010 Work Plan. Other topics to be addressed include methods for improving survey outcomes, trends in accountable care, and responsibilities of governing bodies to ensure the quality of services delivered.
- Healthcare Enforcement for 2010
By Steve Hill and David Pursell, Husch Blackwell Sanders
Having served during the Clinton Administration with many of the Department of Justice''s current leadership, including Attorney General Holder and Deputy Attorney General Ogden, Steve shares a former U.S. attorney''s perspective on the likely approaches local federal prosecutors and colleagues at the Civil Fraud Unit in Washington will take on current healthcare enforcement matters. In addition, David will talk about the recent case of U.S. v. Tuomey and its impact on the concepts of fair market value and commercial reasonableness in hospital/physician relationships. Both Steve and David will talk about the impact of these developments on compliance programs.
