As the leader of the firm’s Healthcare Regulatory & Compliance Counseling team, Pete frequently counsels clients on academic medical center, fraud and abuse, licensing, managed care, medical staffing, Medicare/Medicaid, pharmacy and pharmacy benefit management, 340B drug pricing program, research compliance and transactional issues. He is fully immersed in the regulatory complexities surrounding the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and was on the forefront in advising healthcare systems on HIPAA’s privacy and security provisions. He now helps clients in developing data privacy and security policies and procedures, conducting risk management assessments of information systems and ensuring compliance. When a security incident ensues, Pete is called on to investigate and analyze the scope of the breach, advise on reporting obligations, and develop communications for affected individuals and agencies.
Pete is a frequent speaker on healthcare and cybersecurity matters. Before joining Husch Blackwell, Pete was an assistant general counsel for the Missouri Department of Mental Health and was assistant professor of psychiatry and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.
