Overview

A former federal prosecutor, Jonathan counsels companies and individuals through their toughest and most complex legal situations.

Jonathan focuses on white collar criminal defense, federal investigations brought under the False Claims Act, and litigation against the government and whistleblowers, with an emphasis on matters within the healthcare industry. Clients nationwide seek Jonathan’s knowledge as a former federal prosecutor with extensive experience in both criminal and civil matters to guide them through federal investigations.

Chambers USA commends Jonathan as a “superstar,” “professional in every way,” with “a really incredible way of communicating,” and notes that “clients love him.” For federal investigations into healthcare companies, one client told Chambers USA that they “trusted his knowledge of the industry and the correct course to take,” and that Jonathan “always kept us informed.” Legal500 similarly extols Jonathan for “his deep knowledge of FCA federal investigations.”

Jonathan’s reputation as a top-tier trial lawyer and a leader in the healthcare enforcement community make him a go-to lawyer for any healthcare company under federal scrutiny.

At the U.S. Department of Justice, Jonathan earned a reputation as a top white collar prosecutor and trial lawyer. He was a key member of multiple international healthcare fraud takedowns and prosecuted a series of high-profile financial crime cases. Jonathan prosecuted doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, executives, and even a pastor for white collar crimes during his time as a federal prosecutor and was touted for his trial skills, with one federal judge calling Jonathan’s trial performance “masterful,” following a complex healthcare fraud trial. Jonathan also handled major civil investigations and litigation against companies and individuals under the False Claims Act, resulting in record-breaking settlements and judgments. For his work, Jonathan won some of the highest honors bestowed upon federal prosecutors by the DOJ, FBI, HHS-OIG, and DEA.

Jonathan now uses that experience to guide clients through federal investigations of all kinds, to litigate cases against and involving the government, and to run effective and right-sized internal investigations for corporations. Many of the clients he serves are in the healthcare industry, including health systems, physician groups, and other healthcare companies, along with medical professionals and executives. But clients in all industries count on Jonathan to solve their toughest problems in creative, efficient, and reliable ways.

Jonathan is a leader in the white collar community and a frequent speaker on big-picture policy issues impacting healthcare enforcement, like the growing scope of enforcement under the Anti-Kickback Statute. Jonathan is also the host of Husch Blackwell’s hit podcast False Claims Act Insights, which Law360 recently highlighted as one of the best podcasts for healthcare and life sciences lawyers. Jonathan also serves as a vice chair of the American Health Law Association’s Fraud and Abuse Practice Group and teaches white collar crime as an adjunct professor of law at Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Georgia.
